Information Forums - Streamlining Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) Medicines Listing Processes

Page last updated: 18 September 2018

The Department of Health in collaboration with Medicines Australia will be hosting information forums in both Sydney and Melbourne about the work to date to streamline PBS medicines listing processes.

For this first consultation, two forums will be held in each venue.  One targeted to industry and the other to consumers/clinicians.  These will provide an overview of the proposed changes to the PBS listing process, further development work and implementation approach.

Further forums may be held in October 2018 depending on demand.

Background

The Australian Government signed a five year Strategic Agreement with Medicines Australia recognising their commitment to a viable medicines sector in Australia and a sustainable PBS.

The Department of Health has been working with Medicines Australia and key stakeholders since late 2017, to deliver on commitments to streamline PBS processes as set out under Clause 10.3 of the Strategic Agreement.  Key to this was the need to provide a revised pathways framework to the Minister for approval by July 2018.

The Minister has agreed to broad consultation on proposals for change.

The proposed changes reflect a shared vision and understanding of where improvements can be made. Changes are also expected to deliver greater transparency and certainty. Changes will ensure that Australians continue to receive timely and affordable access to necessary medicines.
