Section 99YBC of the National Health Act 1953 (the Act) requires that an Independent Review of the Impact of PBS Cost Recovery commence after the second anniversary of the amendments coming into force and be completed within four months of that date.

The Act provides that the Review must be conducted by a panel (committee) of at least five people, four of whom are nominees of the Minister for Health and Ageing and the other being a nominee of the Consumers Health Forum of Australia.

The Minister’s nominees include:

  • Professor Michael Kidd, Executive Dean Faculty of Health Services, Flinders University
  • Dr Lynn Weekes, CEO, National Prescribing Service (NPS)
  • Professor Lloyd Sansom
  • Ms Paula Cronin, Centre for Health Economics Research and Evaluation (CHERE)

The Consumers Health Forum of Australia will be represented by its CEO, Ms Carol Bennett.

The committee undertaking the Review held its first meeting in August 2011. Following completion of the Review the committee will provide the Minister a report that will be tabled in Parliament.
